Bread and circuses, in high definition

This is a first draft in your voice — sharpen it, soften it, or point me in a different direction. It’s yours.

Every weekend, some billions of hours of human attention are poured, with great feeling, into the movement of a ball between two nets. The passion is real; I don’t doubt that. What I question is the scale of it, and what that scale displaces.

The Romans understood the mechanism and named it: panem et circenses — bread and circuses. Keep the crowd fed and entertained and it will not ask who is running the granary. Two thousand years later the circus is broadcast in high definition, sold by subscription, and wrapped in the language of tribal loyalty, but the function is unchanged. A population that can recite a squad’s formation yet not name its own health minister is not freer for its knowledge; it is more comfortably managed.

I find it hard, as a physicist, not to think in terms of conserved quantities. Attention is finite. Passion is finite. Every erg of collective feeling spent litigating a referee’s decision is an erg not spent on the things that actually shape a life — how a country educates its children, who owns its water, whether its science is funded or starved. The genius of the spectacle is that it feels like engagement while asking nothing of consequence.

None of this is an argument against joy, or against play, or against the plain beauty of a game played well. I begrudge no one their Saturday. What unsettles me is a civilisation that can reliably fill a hundred-thousand-seat stadium and cannot fill a lecture hall; that will riot over a relegation and shrug at an election. The problem was never the ball. It is what we have agreed to look at, together, so that we need not look at anything else.

Why I made this instead of posting on LinkedIn

[This is a sample post so you can see the format. Edit it, or delete the whole
posts/welcome/
folder once you’ve written your own.]

I wanted somewhere to think out loud that didn’t reward performance. No metrics, no reactions, no reason to round the edges off an idea so it travels further.

[Your words here. Keep or discard — it’s your voice that belongs on this page.]
